REGION: WEST ASIA
Three national roundtables on trade and environment were conducted in Jordan, Lebanon and the Syrian Arab Republic during December 2006 and fostered discussion among public and private representatives on the liberalization of environmental goods and services, compliance with non-tariff barriers to trade, and the impact of industrial policies on small and medium sized enterprises. A national workshop was also conducted in Yemen in May 2006, serving members of the National Committee on Environment and Trade, which was established in May 2006 with technical assistance provided by ESCWA.
A regional workshop was organized in Oman (March 2006) to provide training on trade and environment negotiations and policy-making, while a regional seminar was held in Egypt (November 2006) to achieve regional consensus on trade and environment priorities for the Arab countries.
